Lizzo had all eyes on her outfit when she arrived at the 2024 Met Gala on Monday.
It wasn’t all positive attention, though, as her bizarre dress left many fans watching from home scratching their heads.
The 36-year-old rapper, singer and flautist was decked out in a sleeveless pale brown dress that featured shimmering fabric that perfectly matched her skin tone.
But most of the attention was drawn to the top and bottom of the ensemble.
Lizzo (real name: Melissa Jefferson) wore a puzzling bowl-shaped headpiece that reached several inches above her head and came in for mockery on social media.

The hitmaker was dressed in a custom gown by Weinsanto, according to Vanity Fair.
The designer referred to the outfit as a ‘vase dress,’ which may have described either the bowl-like headpiece or the dress’ upturned skirt, which rose several inches off the red carpet.
The outfit hugged Lizzo’s curves and featured a sizzling sheer panel over her chest to highlight her cleavage.
Although the semi-sheer look matched her skin, it was also enlivened with tiny leaf designs, which made the rapper look like a scene from a gorgeous autumn day complete with falling red, orange and yellow leaves.
The gown was described as a ‘full body corset’ by its designer, and it certainly clung tightly to Lizzo’s figure.
The skirt, which gave a hint of Lizzo’s legs, featured sparser designs, and it transitioned into a cup-like upturned section.
Conceptual sketches of the dress and a photo of the original version from Weinsanto indicate that the outfit previously had no face cut-out, though Lizzo may not have wanted to go to such a high-profile event with her face hidden.
Fans and critics of the recording artist seemed to enjoy poking fun at the unusual outfit on social media.

‘When Lizzo gets completely out of this cocoon, she’ll be a beautiful butterfly,’ joked one user on X (formerly Twitter).
Another person noted that her outfit had ‘meme potential,’ and they couldn’t ‘wait to see the results.’
The Barstool Sports account joked that ‘Dudes see this and all they can think about is crumpling up a piece of paper and shooting it at Lizzo’s dome.’
One person joked: ‘Not bring snacks to the #MetGala while Lizzo is trying to look like the brown bag the snack came in.’
One person wasn’t afraid to be blunt about the dress.
‘Lizzo really let someone convince her that this looked good and on theme and she looks horrific. It’s not a flattering fit, the color washes her out, she looks uncomfortable, and even her usually pretty a** face gets overtaken by the look,’ they vented. ‘This is unfortunate as f***.’
Several social media users also wondered why Lizzo was making public appearances as if nothing had happened after three of her backup dancers sued her for sexual harassment.
Lizzo has denied the women’s claims.

The Costume Institute’s spring exhibition falls on the first Monday in May every year and is held at New York City‘s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This year, the exhibit is titled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, while the dress code is The Garden of Time.
Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth are this year’s co-chairs. Also on the committee is Vogue’s Anna Wintour.
The honorary chairs for the evening are Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.
‘This year’s co-chairs reflect a variety of career achievements, and all have distinct style histories with the Met Gala,’ Vogue shared.
The showcase will feature approximately 250 items drawn from The Costume Institute’s permanent collection, with many of the pieces too fragile to ever be worn again, or even placed upright on a mannequin.
The pieces will be displayed using elements such as AI, GCI and more while playing up the themes of land, sea and sky.
‘It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion,’ said Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, of the upcoming exhibition.

‘One thing I hope this show will activate is that sensorial appreciation of fashion,’ he added.
Guests expected to attend include the Kardashians, Blake Lively, Hailey Bieber, Sarah Jessica Parker and Timothée Chalamet.
Gwendoline Christie, La La Anthony and Ashley Graham are hosting, while YouTuber Emma Chamberlain is expected to interview stars on the red carpet.
